The Indian government has dispatched 1,000 metric tonnes of rice to Malawi as the southern African nation grapples with severe food shortages driven by drought conditions linked to the El Niño climate phenomenon.
A consignment was shipped from Nhava Sheva Port in Maharashtra and is intended to provide immediate relief to communities hit hardest by reduced harvests. Maize, Malawi’s staple crop, has been particularly affected by the prolonged dry spells associated with El Niño, placing millions of people at risk of food insecurity in a country that relies heavily on agriculture for both sustenance and economic stability.
Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the shipment as “a reiteration of India’s continued commitment to supporting partners in the Global South and advancing the spirit of South-South cooperation.” The assistance reflects an increasingly active Indian humanitarian posture across the African continent, channelled through bilateral relationships rather than multilateral aid architecture.
El Niño, a periodic warming of Pacific Ocean surface temperatures that disrupts global weather patterns, has brought reduced rainfall and heightened drought risk to large parts of southern Africa, compounding existing vulnerabilities in Malawi’s agricultural sector.
