In a determined bid to address Malawi’s persistent food shortages, President Lazarus Chakwera has underscored the critical need for enhanced financial investment in the agriculture sector. During his visit to Lombwa Farm in Mchinji, the President emphasized the potential for Malawi to become a hunger-free nation through robust collaboration between the private and public sectors.
President Chakwera, inspecting his own agricultural venture in the area of Senior Chief Mkanda, highlighted the importance of accessible loans for farmers to boost agricultural production. “As President, I aim to lead by example. My investment in agriculture is a testament to my commitment to promoting commercial farming and ending hunger in our country,” he stated.
The President’s farm, financed with the assistance of NBS Bank, serves as a model for the kind of support he believes is essential for farmers nationwide. He called on all banks to follow suit and support the agricultural community.
Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, praised the mega farm initiative, noting that it has created approximately 500 jobs for local residents. He appealed for continued support to ensure the success of such projects, which are vital for the nation’s food security.
Dr. Kwanele Ngwenya, CEO of NBS Bank, echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of financing mega farm projects. “Agriculture is a cornerstone of our economy, and it is imperative that we support our farmers,” he said.
Lombwa Farm, spanning 1,000 hectares, has dedicated 400 hectares to maize cultivation. The mega farm initiative has already benefited 722 individuals across Malawi, demonstrating its significant impact on the community and the country’s food security efforts.
