Mzuzu, Malawi – Fish farming has emerged as a beacon of hope for Malawi, transforming the lives of local farmers and reshaping the nation’s economy. This burgeoning industry is not only providing a sustainable source of income but also contributing to food security and job creation.

A Growing Industry

The Mzuzu Aquaculture Centre (MAC) is at the forefront of supporting local fish farmers. Silvester Jambo, a field officer at MAC, explains, “We provide technical advice, quality fingerlings, and develop fish feed. Our training programs and greenhouse technology ensure a consistent supply of seeds, particularly for the Northern and Central regions.”

Challenges and Opportunities

While the demand for fresh fish in Malawi is high, challenges persist. Poor road networks in dambo areas, where many fish ponds are located, hinder transportation and market access. Additionally, the availability of quality feed, especially floating feed for Tilapia, remains a significant hurdle.

To address these challenges, the Sustainable Fisheries Aquaculture Development (SFAD) project is establishing a feed mill in Lubinga Industrial Site. This initiative aims to make floating feed more affordable and accessible, fostering the expansion of fish farming in the region.

Empowering Communities

The incubation program for youth, supported by the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), is equipping young people with essential skills in aquaculture. This program fosters entrepreneurship and creates employment opportunities within the sector.

Local fish farmer Jobs Mnthali is a testament to the transformative power of fish farming. “This business has allowed me to provide for my family, pay for my children’s education, and improve our living conditions,” he says. “Fish farming has taught me valuable skills in aquaculture management, business operations, and market analysis.”

Morson Thole, another local farmer, echoes Mnthali’s sentiments. “Fish farming has not only transformed my household but has also contributed to food security in the community. I provide affordable fish to local markets and employ locals to assist with the farming process,” he explains.

As the fish farming industry continues to grow, it offers immense potential for economic development, food security, and job creation in Malawi. By addressing challenges and investing in sustainable practices, the nation can harness the full potential of this thriving sector.
