The Ministry of Agriculture has announced a significant reduction in maize prices at ADMARC markets, effective this Friday, September 13th. The new price of K790 per kilogram, or K39,500 per 50kg bag, is a direct response to the economic hardships faced by many Malawians.

In a statement, Secretary for Agriculture Dickxie Verson Kampani highlighted the government’s commitment to providing affordable access to maize, particularly for vulnerable communities. “The reduced pricing strategy is a tangible demonstration of our dedication to ensuring food security for all Malawians,” Kampani said.

To ensure that maize is readily available, ADMARC will initially distribute 10,000 metric tonnes across its network. The southern region, which has been hardest hit by recent challenges, will receive priority, followed by a gradual expansion to other areas.

In addition to the price reduction, the government has also allocated 45,000 metric tonnes of maize for humanitarian purposes. This in-kind food assistance will be targeted towards vulnerable communities identified in the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee report.

The Ministry of Agriculture has emphasized its ongoing commitment to monitoring stock levels and ensuring a consistent supply of maize at ADMARC markets. Regular assessments will be conducted to inform future decisions and maintain food security for all Malawians.
