Malawi Maize Prices Skyrocket, Fueling Inflationary Fears

Maize prices in Malawi surged by 16% in August, reaching K1,510 per kilogram, or K75,500 for a 50kg bag, according to data from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). This dramatic increase contrasts sharply with the modest 4% rise seen during the same period last year.

The price volatility is most pronounced in the country’s southern region, where prices climbed 19% between late July and late August, compared to a 13% increase in the central and northern regions.

The market has been further roiled by recent government interventions. Admarc Limited, the state produce trader, announced plans to import 200,000 metric tonnes of maize, while the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) has raised its purchasing price from farmers in an effort to curb hoarding. The NFRA’s new price of K1,280 per kg for open-market purchases and K1,300 per kg for mega-farmers has been criticized by traders and economists.

Grace Mijiga Mhango, president of the Grain Traders Association of Malawi, stated that the government’s moves have created “unnecessary panic” and pushed domestic prices to mirror import parity rates. She also highlighted the impact of the black-market dollar rate, which is now influencing the pricing of all commodities in Malawi.

Experts fear that the continued price surge will exacerbate inflationary pressures in an economy already strained by election-related spending. John Kapito, executive director of the Consumers Association of Malawi, warned that consumers should “expect the worst high maize prices than ever before,” as traders seek to maximize profits during the peak season.

With maize serving as a staple food, its price volatility poses a significant threat to household food security and broader economic stability.
